About

NB The page is being updated constantly as I add more yarns and materials. Please be patient with me - I am not techy at all!

If you would like to see or ask about something not on the site, please call, message or email and I will do whatever I can to help.

Thanks for your patience!

Fankle Yarns is the brainchild of me, Kathleen Young, Originally opened in 2004 in Troon, South Ayrshire, it was interrupted by the birth of my daughter. Turns out having a baby is a full time job in itself, who knew?! Twelve years later and with daughter now in secondary school, Fankle Yarns has reopened, in Prestwick, South Ayrshire, just along the coast.

I love wool. I’ve always loved wool. I love the variety of it, the possibilities in a ball or hank, the colours! The feel, the warmth, the knowledge that you are wearing things you made yourself. In a digital world it is comforting to have something tangible to hold onto, something that took time to make, something that you can recall every stitch, how you were feeling when you made it, what you were watching/listening to. How you worked through your problems by repetitive movements, stitch after stitch.

I suppose I wanted to bring that feeling of focus and warmth to the local community. I have always been involved in specialist retail, and enjoy sharing knowledge and stories with like-minded folk. When I reopened Fankle I knew that I wanted this space to be inclusive, welcoming, a home from home. There’s a table for us all to sit around with our knitting or crochet, there are classes around it on a Sunday after lunch, followed by the Knit and Natter at 3.

Everyone is welcome at Fankle Yarns. We have extra wide doors for wheelchair access, and are happy to have well-behaved dogs in the shop. More often than not, the kettle is hot for a wee cuppa and I’ve probably not eaten all the biscuits.

See you soon, I hope. Bring your knitting.

This is me. Gah. Hate having my picture in public, but you might want to see me, so here you go. Ok that’s done, moving on….
